Meet the Octopus Capital leadership team

Lieven Debruyne

Lieven Debruyne

CEO, Octopus Capital
Lieven has a long-established career in asset management, including 20 years at Schroders Investment Management. His career at Schroders spanned roles in Hong Kong, including Chief Executive of the Asia Pacific region, and London, as Global Head of Distribution and member of the Group Management Committee. In the latter roles, he was responsible for leading on the strategy and growth of the institutional, retail and wealth management businesses. Lieven also served on the Board of Greencoat Capital, the investment manager to Greencoat UK Wind, the leading listed renewable infrastructure trust. 
 
Most recently Lieven has worked as a Senior Advisor with the Boston Consulting Group, providing consulting expertise in the firm’s financial institution practice, focusing on private markets, asset and wealth management.
Jonathan Digges

Jonathan Digges

Chief Investment Officer
Jonathan oversees the investment strategy of the fund management businesses which form the Octopus fund management group which manages more than £10 billion of retail and institutional money.
He joined Octopus in February 2015 as Product Head for Octopus Inheritance Tax Service. Before joining Octopus, Jonathan ran a team at Lloyds that looked after the bank’s non-core equity portfolio. He also undertook stints at BNP Paribas, Robert Fleming and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Jonathan is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has an MA in Geography from the University of Oxford.
Caroline Turner

Caroline Turner

Head of Client Group
Caroline leads the client group; supporting its strategy and strengthening the relationship between the institutional distribution team and investment functions, as well as focusing on partnerships with investment consultants.

Caroline joined Octopus following a 15-year career at Willis Towers Watson (WTW) and has brought a wealth of diverse experience that spans investment consulting and strategic sales; including designing investment strategy and solutions for institutional investors. She also focused on helping clients establish their ESG values and creating impact through their investments. Most recently, Caroline was in a global people leadership role, in charge of setting the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) strategy and shaping the culture of the business. 

Caroline graduated from the University of Exeter where she studied Mathematics and she also holds the Investment Management Certificate.
Alan Cauberghs

Alan Cauberghs

Head of Private Debt
Alan joined Octopus in 2025 as Head of Private Debt. Prior to joining Octopus, Alan was at Investcorp Credit Management diversifying their private credit platform and building out a direct lending franchise. He was previously at Generali to manage the Private Debt and Private Equity business and became a board member of Generali Global Infrastructure (now Infranity). Before that Alan worked at Schroders to build and manage the Private Assets platform, including real estate, infrastructure, private debt and private equity strategies.

Alan was also the deputy Head of Fixed Income at Dexia Asset Management (now Candriam) before assuming the responsibility for EMEA business development at a US fixed income manager, Fischer Francis Trees & Watts (“FFTW”). At FFTW he became the Managing Director for the European business. In 2009 Alan became a founding partner of the alternative credit asset manager Serone Capital Management, specialising in structured credit, stressed and distressed opportunities.

Alan holds a MSc in Finance and Economics from the University of Antwerp and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Edward Clough

Edward Clough

Head of Real Estate
Ed is responsible for leading Octopus Real Estate and sits on the Investment Committee. Ed joined Octopus in 2017 and previously led our Care Homes and Corporate Development teams. For the latter role, Ed led Octopus Real Estate’s growth into new sectors and developed our existing businesses. Prior to joining Octopus, Ed was a lawyer with international law firm Allen & Overy. He has a BA in Economics from Durham University and an MBA from the University of Cambridge’s Judge Business School.
John Averill

John Averill

Chief Risk Officer
John joined Octopus in 2015 as Head of Risk. He began his career at PwC London, before moving to UBS, where he covered risks across the whole business in Wealth Management, Asset Management and the Investment Bank.

Simon Rogerson

Simon Rogerson

Group CEO
Simon has overall responsibility for the day-to-day decisions and strategic direction of Octopus Group.

Much of his time is spent looking for new opportunities for Octopus, such as moving into the commercial energy sector with Octopus Energy.

Before founding Octopus in 2000, Simon spent two years working at Mercury Asset Management. He holds a first-class MA in Modern Languages from St. Andrews University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Chair
Stuart is the Chair of the Octopus Investments Limited Board. He was appointed March 2024.
Ruth Handcock

Ruth Handcock

Non Executive Director
Ruth is CEO of Octopus Money, a money advice brand for everyone. She believes everyone should be able to get help with their money, regardless of how much they earn or are able to invest.

Ruth has been part of the Octopus Group since 2018. Before Octopus Money, she was CEO of Octopus Investments. She sits on the Octopus Group Board. Ruth has had more work lives than an octopus has tentacles: her career has spanned roles that have included zoology, strategic consultancy, finance director for Barcardi’s Martini & Cognac portfolios, founding employee of a challenger bank, and working in Sierra Leone for the Ministry of Trade.

Chief Operations Officer
Jonathan manages a number of our central support services. Jonathan joined Octopus in 2019. His previous roles include Chief Operating Officer of Zoopla’s software business and Managing Director of TripAdvisor’s holiday lettings business.
